U.S. Hails End of Adjara Standoff

The United States hails the progress that was announced in the talks between the central authorities of Georgia and the local authorities of its Autonomous Republic of Adjara.

“President Saakashvili announced earlier today [on March 18] that he and Adjaran leader Aslan Abashidze have reached agreement that will allow Georgia to hold democratic elections on March 28 throughout the country, including Adjara,” Adam Ereli, deputy spokesman of the U.S. Department of State said at a news briefing in Washington.

“Mr. Abashidze has committed to meeting international standards, and that international observers, led by the OSCE and domestic observers, will monitor the elections. We will continue to follow developments closely and urge both sides to adhere to their commitments,” Adam Ereli added.
