Security Ministry Unveils Alleged Plot against Adjarian Opposition

The law-enforcement agencies today detained Adjarian resident Leri Beridze in Tbilisi, who is suspected of murdering Chief of the Emergency Situations Department of Adjarian Interior Ministry Temur Inaishvili.

Deputy Security Minister Giorgi Ugulava said at a news briefing on March 26 that Leri Beridze arrived in Tbilisi to “assassinate the leaders of the opposition [Our Adjara movement] Koba Khabazi and Edward Surmanidze, as well as chief of the Georgian Railway Levan Varshalomidze.”

“Allegedly, Adjarian Security Minister Soso Gogitidze has ordered this person to assassinate Abashidze’s [Adjarian leader] opponents [Khabazi and Surmanidze]. The investigation is underway, and we hope other crimes will also be revealed after the suspect is interrogated,” Ugulava said.
