Georgian Troops to Depart for Iraq with Delay

Georgian unit of 159 soldiers, which was set to depart for Iraq on April 6, will arrive in Iraq with one-day delay on April 7.

Georgian troops will be deployed the cities of Baghdad, Baiji and Tikrit.

The Georgian servicemen from 16th Mountain Battalion, which have undergone the U.S.-funded Train-and-Equip Program, will be guarding the military bases and other facilities of the coalition forces and also will take party in mop-up operations.

The first detachment of 70 mine-clearing experts and doctors, who were sent to Iraq last August and stationed in a town of Tikrit, returned to Georgia in early March.
