The Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Zurab Tchiaberashvili, handed in his resignation on April 19th.
Tchiaberashvili, who has chaired the CEC since last November, made no official statement regarding his decision so far. However, as the unofficial reports say, Tchiaberashvili will be appointed by President Saakashvili as the Mayor of the country’s capital city, Tbilisi.
The CEC has already elected Dimitri Kitoshvili as acting chairman. He was the secretary of the CEC previously.
The decision comes as a surprise, as Mr. Tchiaberashvili told Civil Georgia on April 18th that he intended “to continue working as the CEC Chairman.”
