In his televised appeal to the Adjarian population at dawn on May 6 Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania called on the local population for calm, in the wake of ex-Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’s resignation. Zurab Zhvania made televised address on Adjara TV.
“Now, the main task is to maintain peace and calm. We guarantee security to all supporters of Aslan Abashidze, if they cooperate with us. We do not aim at reprisals, however we will not tolerate looting,” Zurab Zhvania said.
He said a governmental commission will be set up in Adjara led by Interior Minister Giorgi Baramidze to establish order in the region.
People celebrated resignation of Abashidze, who fled to Russia all night long. No disorders were reported.
