Parliament Lifted Immunity from MP Suspected of Extortion

The Parliament lifted on May 20 the MP immunity from Giorgi Kenchadze, member of the ruling National Movement ? Democrats party. The Prosecutor?s Office accused MP Kenchadze, 33, of extortion.

According to the General Prosecutor?s Office Kenchadze was arrested on May 19 as the money was handed over to him by the Adjarian businessman whose name was not disclosed.

Law enforcers reported that Kenchadze demanded USD 100,000 from Adjarian businessman and issued threats that the General Prosecutor?s Office would probe his business if the money was not paid.

?The fact that he [MP Kenchadze] is the member of the National Movement is very disappointing, but we will arrest and punish everyone, who will be suspected in crime regardless their position,? President Saakashvili said at a news briefing on May 19.
