Opposition non-partisan MPs Koba Davitashvili and Zviad Dzidziguri launched collection of signatures for holding a plebiscite in Adjara regarding cancellation of the region’s autonomous status.
Both Davitashvili and Dzidziguri are the former allies of President Saakashvili.
In a response to the campaign launched by Davitashvili and Dzidziguri, MP Giga Bokeria of the ruling National Movement-Democrats party arrived in Adjara’s capital Batumi on May 27 to assure locals that the country’s central government would not lift Adjara’s autonomous status.
The Parliament rejected on May 7 the proposal of Koba Davitashvili on holding a plebiscite in Adjara over cancellation of the region’s autonomous status.
