Georgia’s Favorite Candidate Elected as CoE Secretary General

British parliamentarian Terry Davis has been elected to serve a 5-year term as Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), following a vote by members of the organization’s Parliamentary Assembly on June 22. Georgian delegation supported candidacy of Terry Davis.


Georgian authorities made no secret that Terry Davis was Tbilisi’s favorite candidacy, especially after disputes with the former Secretary General of the CoE Walter Schwimmer, which sparked regarding the Adjara crisis in early May.


Terry Davis visited Tbilisi on June 8 as part of his pre-election campaign.


In the first round of the election, which took place earlier today, 157 members of the Assembly voted for Mr Davis (absolute majority), with 91 voting for Walter Schwimmer and 51 for Kristiina Ojuland, according to the CoE press release.
