As a result of an amendment made to the Georgia’s tax code in January 2004, the excise rate on tobacco products increased from 0.2% to 0.25% starting on July 1.
After July 1, according to the Finance Ministry, both imported and domestically produced tobacco products will be taxed the 20% value added tax (VAT).
The new taxation has already resulted in an increase of the price of tobacco products in Georgia.
