Russian MFA Backs PACE Resolution on Georgia

In an information note issued on January 28, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed support towards the resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe on January 25 over honoring obligations and commitments by Georgia

The statement reads: ?the calls towards the Georgian authorities voiced by the PACE are important.? The Russian Foreign Ministry underlined the importance of those articles of the resolution in which the Georgian government is criticized for an ?inadequate model of autonomy? for Adjara and Constitutional changes that granted the President ?excessive powers.?

The statement pays particular attention to Adjara?s autonomous status.

?Tbilisi?s actions towards Adjara significantly devalue the recent proposals by Tbilisi over the autonomous status of South Ossetia,? the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also supported PACE?s calls for the Georgian government to solve the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflicts through the peaceful means.
