Aleksandre Sukhitashvili, the Chief of Police of the Shida Kartli region, which borders breakaway South Ossetia, and his deputies, as well as the chiefs of the police departments of all the districts located in the Shida Kartli region, were sacked on March 13.
At an emergency meeting of the National Security Council on March 13, President Saakashvili instructed Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili and General Prosecutor Zurab Adeishvili to probe into the allegations that the police officials are partaking in smuggling goods from breakaway South Ossetia.
Earlier today, Beso Giorgashvili, the Chief of police in Kareli, a town in the Shida Kartli region, was arrested for alleged links with smuggling in the region.
