515 Applicants Compete for Seats in Central Election Commission

President Saakashvili is expected to propose on May 29 a short list of 19 nominees of possible members of Central Election Commission (CEC) to the Parliament for consideration. A total of 515 applicants applied to participate in a contest which was announced by the authorities on May 11.


According to the new rule of composition of the CEC, the Parliament will have to select six out of this 19-person short list. The seventh members of the CEC ? the Chairman, will be appointed personally by the President out of the same short list of applicants.


Members of the CEC should not be affiliated with any political party, according to the law.
