In an interview with the Russian news agency Regnum, Secretary of National Security Council of breakaway Abkhazia Stanislav Lakoba hinted that Abkhazia is ready to consider relations with Georgia in frames of a “confederation,” but ruled out talks over this issue “against the background of current military rhetoric coming from Georgian.”
When asked why Abkhazia does not seek joining Russia to better ensure its security, Lakoba answered that this kind of scenario is considered only “on the level of declarations,” and added that it is not realistic for Russia itself.
“At the same time this step [joining Russia] might become kind of crossing Rubicon,” Lakoba said.
He said that Russia’s role is of crucial importance for stability and security in the region, but added: “If our relations with Russia were based on real sincerity, that would be just perfect.”
