Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said, while addressing the Parliament on February 28, that the murder case of Sandro Girgvliani “will be solved in the nearest future.”
Merabishvili was convened to the Parliament at the request of the opposition parliamentarians to brief the lawmakers about the Interior Minister about the investigation into this murder case, which several top Interior Ministry officials may allegedly be linked to.
The opposition has already demanded the resignation of Data Akhalaia, chief of the constitutional department of the Interior Ministry and his deputy Oleg Melnikov, Guram Donadze, spokesman of the Interior Ministry and Vasil Sanodze, chief of the general inspection of the Interior Ministry. These officials are allegedly linked to the murder case.
Minister Merabishvili said that all these officials have already been interrogated. “But there are no evidence indicating that these persons should be recognized as suspects,” Merabishvili added.
He said that the allegations to link Interior Ministry officials to this murder case are “attempts to discredit police.”
