Opposition Sets up Group to Probe into High-Profile Cases

The opposition parliamentary faction Democratic Front, which unites MPs from the Conservative and Republican parties, announced on March 3 a plan to set up an independent “public monitoring group” which will probe into cases, involving alleged wrongdoings by the officials.

Chairman of the Democratic Front MP Davit Zurabishvili said at a news conference that public monitoring group, will unite journalists as well along with parliamentarians.

He said that one of the first cases, which the group will try to investigate, will be the murder of Sandro Girgvliani. MP Zurabishvili said that the group will also probe into business interests of officials, including leader of the parliamentary majority MP Maia Nadiradze of the ruling National Movement party.

MP Zurabishvili said that setting up of this monitoring group “is also an attempt to fill up the gap persisting in the investigative journalism.”
