Civic Groups Call for Public Probe into High-Profile Crimes

A group of human right watchdog organization proposed on April 5 to create an independent investigative team which will probe into recent high-profile crimes.

These groups, including the Georgian Young Lawyers? Association (GYLA) and Article 42 of the Constitution, requested that the Parliament give the investigative group the authority to access investigation materials.

Human right groups say that the Sandro Girgvliani murder case and the March 27 violent incident in the Tbilisi prison are among those cases which require independent public investigations.

?There is almost no confidence towards the General Prosecutor?s Office,? Lia Mukhashavria, of the Article 42 of the Constitution, said.

Parliamentarians from the ruling National Movement party have already downplayed this proposal.
