President Saakashvili said on September 3 that “a new Georgian society” based on equal opportunities and justice has been established in the country, where several years ago nepotism and corruption thrived, particularly in the education system.
Saakashvili was speaking at a meeting with Georgian participants of the 2007 Hanoi International Mathematical Olympiad for high school students in which Georgia succeeded in securing a gold, a silver and a bronze medal. The state subsequently awarded them and their teachers with one-year scholarships.
“The major criterion for honoring people in today’s Georgia is their ability to work hard, intelligence and not influential links, money or family background,” Saakashvili said. “Recently I was told that none of the would-be students from several wealthy families could enroll in the university after this year’s exams.”
“This is just and represents the establishment of a new Georgian society, wherein youth of your type have broad opportunities,” Saakashvili added.
