U.S. Calls for Peaceful Solution of South Ossetian Conflict

Elizabeth Jones, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs said on July 30 that the United States is interested in the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Georgia?s breakaway South Ossetia.
 
She said after talks with Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze that Georgia is a strategic partner of the U.S. in combating terrorism. Elizabeth Jones expressed hopes that Georgia?s territorial integrity will be restored through political means. 
 
The Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson thanked the United States for its support, adding that the Georgian side will do its best to preserve peace and stability in the region.
 
?We will do the utmost to keep the situation under control. The Georgian side will never yield to provocations,? Burjanadze said.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs pays a one-day visit to Georgia to discuss with the Georgian leadership and South Ossetia, as well as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.
