Two Georgian internal troops were killed and several others injured as a result of an overnight shootouts near the Georgian villages of Tamarasheni and Eredvi in breakaway South Ossetia, reported Georgian officials on August 16.
Officials from the Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in the conflict zone told the Itar-Tass news agency that an exchange of gunfire continued all night long.
The Georgian side claims that the shootout bagan when the South Ossetian side opened fire from the village of Sarabuk.
?The enemy fire was suppressed only after the Georgian side responded with heavy fire,? Aleko Kiknadze, commander of the Georgian peacekeeping troops stationed in the conflict zone, told Rustavi 2 television on August 16.
According to the Georgian side, at least 15 South Ossetian militia members died as a result of overnight shootouts; however the South Ossetian side has not confirmed the report yet.
A total of five Georgian servicemen have been killed in the conflict zone for past week.
