A 21-member group, which monitors situation in the Georgian prisons in terms of protection of human rights, held meeting at the Ministry of Justice on September 9.
The monitoring group was set up under the presidential decree issued in August and consists of 21 representatives of the Georgian non-governmental and civil organizations. According to the presidential decree the monitoring group has right to enter prisons at any time without any permits.
At the meeting on September 9, the group discussed legal aspects of its activity. The group intends to create a Monitoring Council of Penitentiary System. Special regulations for this council were elaborated and now are the subject for approval for the Justice Minister Giorgi Papuashvili.
