Explosion at Transmitting Line Cuts Power in Georgia

Two explosions that rocked the “kavkasioni” transmitting line on the night of September 20 resulted in the loss of power for most areas in Georgia.  The explosions took place in the Khashuri region of Georgia. Last week, the Ministry of Energy reported an attempted explosion on the same transmitting line.

Minister of Energy of Georgia Nika Gilauri characterized the explosions as an “act of sabotage.” According to him, the situation is complicated by the emergency shutdown of two of the four generating units being employed at Inguri, Georgia’s biggest hydropower plant. The Minister said the best case scenario dictates that power could be restored as early as the evening of September 21.
