Abkhazia Reinforces Administrative Borders

Acting Prime Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Astamur Tarba said on October 2 that the situation in the region is calm on the eve of the October 3 presidential elections.

“No additional forces have been mobilized for security measures. Only the border with Georgia has been reinforced,” Astamur Tarba told RIA Novosti news agency.

The administrative border between breakaway Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia lies in the Gali District of Abkhazia. Head of the Abkhaz government-in-exile Irakli Alasania told reporters earlier on October 2 that a destabilization in the situation is anticipated in Gali on elections day.

He said that the supporters of the Abkhaz presidential candidates may provoke tensions in the predominately Georgian population of the Gali District and then accuse the Georgian side of organizing destabilization actions there.
