PACE to Debate Russian-Georgian Relations

Debates over the current relationship between Russia and Georgia will be held at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg on October 7.

The Georgian side is seeking the appointment of a PACE special rapporteur to analyze the issue of Russo-Georgian relations.

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze left on October 6 for Strasbourg to address the PACE during the debates.

?We will inform PACE regarding the current problems which we have with Russia. I want to say that our objective criticism of Russian policy does not mean that we do not want to build constructive relations with Russia. But Russia should respond reciprocally and not with double-standard policy,? Nino Burjanadze told reporters late on October 5.

The bureau of the PACE approved a proposal put forth by the Georgian side to hold the debates, despite opposition from the Russian parliamentary delegation.
