Brigadier-General Vladimer Chachibaia, new chief of general staff of the armed forces, presented his three new deputies on Thursday.
Col. Nikoloz Janjgava, who has been serving in the armed forces since 1992, became the first Depuy Chief of Staff. He has previously headed the J-3 (Operational Command) department of the General Staff, also responsible for implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package and the joint NATO-Georgia education initiatives. At various points he has headed the Georgian military detachment in Afghanistan deployed under ISAF and headed the NATO-compatible Rapid Reaction Force.
The two other new deputies are Col. Zaza Chkhaidze, who led the Military Intelligence Department (J-2) of the General Staff, and Col. Shalva Jabakhidze, who was previously in charge of the Western Command of the Land Forces. They replaced Bg.Gen. Giorgi Surmava and Col. Roman Jokhadze, respectively.
