Today evening special advisor on economic issues to President Shevardnadze, president of the National Bank of Poland Leszek Balcerowicz arrives to Tbilisi. Today he will meet President Shevardnadze and Speaker of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania.
According to certain sources of information, Balcerowicz might refuse to continue his contract and refuse to work as Shevardnadze’s advisor. His contract expires on September 18th. As independent experts explain, Georgian authorities failed to create proper environment in the country to implement Balcerowicz’s economic recommendations and therefore his activities in Georgia were unfruitful.
Leszek Balcerowicz has been appointed as President Shevardnadze’s advisor approximately one year ago. The US Government paid him USD 250 000 per year for his work as President’s advisor.
Balcerowicz’s decision on continuing his contract will be known only after the visit.
