Independent Experts for Georgia’s Accession to Anti-Terrorist Conventions

(Tbilisi, May 16, Civil Georgia) – Experts group representing the parliament, the Ministry of Justice and think-tanks met today at the premises of the UN Association of Georgia to plan for promoting Georgia’s accession to the anti-terrorist conventions.

The initiative of UN Association “Allying Against Terror” is supported by the US government through the US Embassy Democracy Commission. The project aims at supporting regional security and free flow of information.

It is planned to translate and publish the collection of 12 major multilateral conventions and protocols related to participating states’ responsibilities for combating terroristm. Upon completion of translation works, special meetings will be held with leaders of key parliamentary factions and other official structures to discuss conventions and the needs fo accession.

The intersectoral expert team would be a driving force of the effort. Project officials say that it would help to generate the sense of urgency to build safeguards against international crime and equip decision-makers with qualified translations of the relevant legislation.
