Parliament Fails to Dismiss Zhvania’s Supporter Vice-Speaker

(Tbilisi, May 17, Civil Georgia) – Parliament voted at the special session today to dismiss Zurab Zhvania’s team member Eldar Shengelaia from the post of the Vice-Speaker.

114 MPs voted for his dismissal, while the 118 votes are necessary to fire Parliamentary Vice-Speaker. 24 MPs, supporters of Zhvania’s team, factions Traditionalists and Mikheil Saakashvili’s Reforms for Democratic Georgia were against.

Earlier today at the Parliamentary special session Eldar Shengelaia refused to resign and demanded voting.

MPs discuss the redistribution of the Parliamentary posts on May 17. Earlier MPs agreed that 4 Vice-Speakers from 5 (except Shengelaia) would remain on their posts.

Deputies have to elect today two more Vice-Speakers, one from the Industrialists faction and another from the independent MPs, as the Parliament took the decision to increase number of Vice-Speakers from 5 to 7.
