(Tbilisi, July 5, Civil Georgia) – The MPs initiated consultations on the issue to cancel Rtsmunebuli’s (the governor of the region) position. Governors are appointed directly by the President.
At the special Parliamentary session on July 4 the most of the MPs agreed that the governor should be elected by the population and not appointed by the President.
Only the pro-Presidential Parliamentary factions reject the proposal to cancel governor’s position.
Other factions claim that the governors became the most influential officials in the regions and most of them misuse the power.
The campaign against the governors was initiated by the Democrats and the Movement for Democratic Reforms Parliamentary factions, which demand resignation of one of the most influential governors Levan Mamaladze.
