Human Rights Activists Urge for Suspension of Chechens’ Extradition

(Tbilisi, December 24, 2002. Civil Georgia) – Human rights advocacy NGOs and several Georgian MPs signed today an appeal to the Georgian authorities and Chairman of the Supreme Court to suspend the extradition of three alleged Chechen militants to Russia.

The Georgian Supreme Court will discuss the appeal of three Chechens to cancel the decision of the Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office on their hand over to Russia.

Lawyers of the Chechens’ claim that the extradition is illegal because the process of determination of their identities is invalid.

Three alleged Chechen militants were detained by the Georgian border guards in early August together with other 10 armed men who supposedly entered Georgia from Chechnya.  Georgia has already handed over five of them to Russia.
