Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili told reporters today that the interior troops will guard the perimeters of the prisons.
The decision follows the largest jailbreak in Georgia, when 129 inmates of the Rustavi top security prison escaped on September 10. 48 jailbreakers are recaptured so far.
The penitentiary system was transferred from the Interior Ministry?s subordination to the Justice Ministry in 2001, as a result of reforms. Some government officials, including President Shevardnadze, blame the reforms for the increased jailbreaks.
