President, Opposition Leader Meet over Upcoming Elections

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili met on July 19 with Davit Usupashvili, leader of the opposition Development Movement, to discuss plans for cooperation in the upcoming presidential elections.

Usupashvili said after the meeting that he feels “moderately optimistic” and hopes that the two will manage to unite forces, adding that President Margvelashvili would make a decision on this proposal within a week.

Davit Usupashvili, who served as the Parliament Speaker in 2012-2016, also noted that he was ready to withdraw from presidential race if President Margvelashvili decided to run for his second term.

The meeting comes two weeks after Usupashvili addressed President Margvelashvili with an open letter, saying “the situation in the country is difficult” and that “political forces should join forces” to find the way out.
