Presidents of European Council and European Commission, Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker, respectively, extended their sincere congratulations to Salome Zurabishvili on her election as Georgia’s fifth President.

The EU Presidents said in their joint letter that “these last direct presidential elections were an important moment for Georgia, marking the conclusion of the shift to a full parliamentary system.”

“These were hard fought elections and your leadership in overcoming political polarisation will be of paramount importance,” they said.

“EU remains committed to continuing our excellent bilateral cooperation with Georgia. We look forward to working together to continue the consolidation of Georgia’s democratic institutions, and to advance the political association and economic integration between EU and Georgia,” Tusk and Juncer said.

They also stated that EU remains “firmly committed” to Georgia’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and “will also continue to actively support conflict resolution efforts.”
