One More Lawmaker Quits Georgian Dream Majority

MP Levan Koberidze quit the Georgian Dream’s majority group, reducing the ruling party’s Parliamentary representation to 106 lawmakers.

Koberidze announced the decision on May 1, shortly after the Parliament endorsed with its final hearing the GD-sponsored Bill on Common Courts, which specifies the selection and nomination procedures of the Supreme Court judges.

The MP said he had alternative proposals concerning the draft bill, but failed to convince the GD members to take his views into account.

Koberidze is the ninth GD lawmaker to quit the ruling party, following Levan Gogichaishvili, Eka Beselia, Beka Natsvlishvili, Gedevan Popkhadze, Zviad Kvachantiradze, Gia Zhorzholiani, Mirian Tsiklauri and Koba Narchemashvili.

Koberidze said he will continue as an independent lawmaker.

The MP defections were prompted by the dispute surrounding the judicial appointments. For detailed coverage of the developments, see our tag on justice reform.
