The Georgian government has named Grigol Liluashvili as new Head of the State Security Service, the country’s domestic counterintelligence agency today.
The post became vacant after its former head Vakhtang Gomelauri was appointed as the Interior Minister a month ago.
In January 2019, Liluashvili, who until now was the acting Head of the State Security Service became the first deputy head, replacing Ioseb Gogashvili, who had quit the post earlier in August 2018.
According to the government’s administration, Liluashvili’s candidacy will first be discussed by the Parliament’s Defense and Security Committee this week, while next week it will be discussed at the Parliament’s plenary session.
If endorsed by the Parliament, Liluashvili will hold the new position for a term of six years.
