The Georgian Interior Ministry announced on September 18 that it has launched an investigation into the attempted suicide of 22-year-old Giorgi Khumarashvili, the driver of Tianeti Municipality Mayor Tamaz Mechiauri, under the first part of Article 115 of the Criminal Code implying incitement to suicide.
According to the Interior Ministry, Khumarashvili has been hospitalized and is undergoing necessary treatment. No other details were reported.
According to the media, before the attempted suicide Khumarashvili was triggered by the confrontation with Gamgebeli (local governance executive) of one of the villages of the Tianeti Municipality, Zurab Bekauri. The opposition Mtavari Arkhi TV insinuated that Bekauri threatened Khumarashvili since he refused to provide “detailed information” about his boss, Mechiauri. Bekauri admits conflict but rejects claims he exerted pressure to obtain information from the driver.
