Russia Offers Military Assistance to Defeat Terrorists in Pankisi
(Tbilisi, February 8, Civil Georgia) – Russia is ready to provide Georgian military assistance to combat Chechen fighters and terrorists harboring in Pankisi gorge, northeastern Georgia, Russian Chief of the General Staff Anatoly Kvashnin stated on February 7, Russian news agency Interfax reports.
Russia is willing to provide military assistance if Georgia itself requests it, Kvashnin said.
Georgian government admits that Chechen fighters are among refugees from Chechnya living in criminal-ridden Pankisi gorge.
Officials in Tbilisi state that Georgia is able to normalize situation in Pankisi without any assistance.
Anti-criminal operation is being held in Pankisi gorge at the moment by the Georgian law enforcers.
