CoE Delegation Visits Georgia
(Tbilisi, June 3, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Council of Europe (CoE) co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Georgia Matyas Eorsi (Hungary) and Evgeni Kirilov (Bulgaria) pay fourth fact-finding visit to Georgia.
The visit aims at assessing the state of Georgia’s honoring of the commitments of the CoE undertaken by Georgia while joining the organization in 1999.
The CoE delegation will focus in particular on preparations for the Parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 2, including revision of the electoral code, updating of voters’ lists, as well as the political climate ahead of the poll, including freedom of the media.
In a September 2001 resolution the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said that, although some progress has been made since accession, Georgia was far from honoring its obligations and commitments as a CoE member state.
The members of the delegation plan to hold meetings with the representatives of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, the Embassies of the European Union member states, NGOs and the national minorities.
