Opposition Party Voices Concern Over Bread Price Increase
(Tbilisi, July 3, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The opposition National Movement party expressed protest against the bread price rises in the country and intends to hold half an hour warning protest rally in 20 regions of Georgia on June 5.
Prices increases reported in several regions of Georgia by 5 Tetri (approximately 2.5 cents). Authorities say that the fight against the contraband of the bread flour caused increase of price.
The government also claims that the price also increased on bread flour in Russia and Ukraine, which are the Georgia?s main suppliers with this product.
?We are deeply concerned about the price rises on this vital product,? Political Secretary of the National Movement MP Koba Davitashvili said at the news briefing today.
MP Vano Merabishvili of the National Movement said that the increase of price on bread might trigger social unrest in the country.
