56 Jailbreakers recaptured

The police recaptured 56 jailbreakers by September 12 out of 129, including one of the organizers of the breakout. Four escapees returned to jail voluntarily.

In the largest jailbreak in Georgian history, 129 convicts, described as “dangerous” by authorities, escaped late on 10 September from the Rustavi top security prison near Tbilisi. One prison guard was killed and another was injured.

President Shevardnadze ordered on September 11 an immediate investigation by the National Security Council into the mass escape.
