Breakaway Region Protest Opening of Constituencies in South Ossetia

The leadership of the breakaway South Ossetian Republic protests opening of three polling stations in the Znauri district in South Ossetia.

De facto Parliamentary Chairman Stanislav Kochiyev said on September 24, the leadership of South Ossetia will apply to OSCE to settle the problem.

Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Nana Devdariani claimed, over 700 voters live in the Znauri district and they will have a chance to participate in the November 2 parliamentary elections.

The conflict in Ossetia is frozen since 1992, when the sporadic violence in the area led to a loss of control over the region by the Georgia?s central government.

As a result of peace process, the control has been partially restored in several villages populated by ethnic Georgians.

At the moment Georgian, Ossetian and Russian peacekeepers are deployed in the area to guarantee the peace in the region.
