Group of MPs Demand Samegrelo Governor’s Resignation

MP Bezhan Gunava of the ruling National Movement party and MP Giorgi Tsanava of the opposition New Rights-Industrialists coalition convened a joint press conference on December 28 and demanded the resignation of Gigi Ugulava, Governor of the western Georgian region of Samegrelo.

“He is an unprincipled person who does not take into consideration the people’s interests and he must resign,” MP Bezhan Gunava from the parliamentary majority said at the press conference.

“He does not even speak the Megrelian [language]; the Governor of Samegrelo region should definitely speak Megrelian,” opposition MP Giorgi Tsanava said.

President Saakashvili appointed Gigi Ugulava as the Governor of Samegrelo in late September.  Ugulava previously served as Deputy Security Minister.
