Amnesty Says Police Enjoy Impunity in ‘Dozens of Cases’
Police officers continued to enjoy impunity in dozens of cases in which torture, ill-treatment and excessive use of force have been alleged, London-based human rights group Amnesty International said in its annual report issued on May 23.
The report on Georgia focuses on the high-profile murder case of Sandro Girgvliani and a prison incident in Tbilisi, last March, which led to the deaths of at least seven inmates.
The report also noted that “the authorities failed to protect women from domestic violence or bring its perpetrators to justice.”
It also claimed that civil society activists in South Ossetia risked harassment from the seccessionist authorities because of contacts with Georgian activists.
On a positive note, Amnesty International praised Parliament for removing in April any time limit on the period in which charges could be brought for the crimes of torture, threat of torture, or inhuman and degrading treatment.
