Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that commander of the CIS peacekeeping forces in Abkhazian-Georgian conflict zone General Sidorichev’s statement about the mandate of the peacekeepers is provocative.
On October 18th General Sidorichev stated that Russian peacekeepers will open fire in case of any threat. This will happen even if no actual fire would be directed towards the peacekeepers but the situation will be considered as threatening for the Russian peacekeepers.
MFA of Georgia considers the statement as the part of the mounted political pressure on Georgia by Russia.
Georgia demands multinational peace corps to replace the Russian peacekeeping forces deployed along the border of Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia since mid-1994 under the auspices of the CIS.
