United Nations Security Council discussed the situation in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia on October 30 behind the closed doors.
Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Georgia Dieter Boden after the meeting stressed the need for talks aimed at determining the future status of Abkhazia within that country.
Asked about negotiations by interested States – known as the “Group of Friends” – on a draft paper concerning the distribution of competences between Tbilisi and Sukhumi, Mr. Boden said “unfortunately, really there is no striking progress.”
The peace talks between Georgia and de facto government of Abkhazia were terminated after the fighting broke out between combined Georgian-Chechen fighters and Abkhaz military units on October 4 .
