Local Authorities in Eastern Georgia Threaten to Resign
(Tbilisi. January 10. Civil Georgia) – Local authorities in Akhmeta region where Pankisi gorge is situated told to the State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania that they would resign and start protests in case the law enforcers do not improve situation in Pankisi gorge.
Local authorities met with the State Security Ministry on January 10 in Akhmeta.
Pankisi gorge is a half criminal-ridden region in eastern Georgia bordering with Chechnya. Kidnappers detain two abducted man in Pankisi at the moment demanding ransom.
Valeri Khaburdzania admits that the gorge is no-go area for the Georgian authorities. On December 28, State Security Minister stated that skyrocketing crime rates seriously aggravate the situation in Pankisi gorge.
