Russo-Georgian Talks Resume in Moscow
(Tbilisi, January 15, Civil Georgia) – Negotiation on the framework agreement between Georgia and Russia continues in Moscow on January 15. Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Mikheil Ukleba leads the Georgian delegation.
The first talks on the new framework agreement took place in Tbilisi on December 21, 2001. Foreign Affairs Minister Irakli Menagarishvili, states that he is optimistic regarding the negotiations process.
Presidents of Georgia and the Russian Federation signed a framework agreement about friendship, peaceful relationship and cooperation on November 3, 1994. Georgian Parliament ratified the document but Russian Duma Council failed to reciprocate.
Georgian President Shevardnadze stated after resumption of the talks on December 23 that at this time Russian Duma Council should ratify an agreement first.
