Police Checkpoints Moved Deeper into Pankisi Gorge

(Tbilisi, January 15, Civil Georgia) – According to the Georgian Interior Minister’s decree issued on January 14 Georgian police and internal troops moved their checkpoints deeper into Pankisi gorge on January 15.

Thus the Minister fulfilled one of the demands of the protesters who call for crackdown on crime in Pankisi.

The protests were launched on January 7 by the group of Georgian veterans of war in Afghanistan and later on joined by the local inhabitants.

Protesters believe that relocation of the checkpoints from the entry to the gorge deeper on its territory would easen control of the law enforcement agencies on tense criminal situation in Pankisi.
