MPs Against Withdrawal of Georgian Army from Kodori Gorge

(Tbilisi, January 18, Civil Georgia) – Factions XXI Century and Abkhazia expressed discontent about the protocol signed by Special Affairs Minister of Georgia Malkhaz Kakabadze and representatives of breakaway republic of Abkhazia on December 17.

According to the protocol, Georgian army is to be withdrawn from the upper part of Kodori gorge in exchange of Abkhazian side pulling the military hardware out of the lower part of Kodori and Tkhvarcheli region. It is also said in the protocol that the UN observers will renovate monitoring of Kodori gorge, which has not occurred for the last 18 months.

The MPs are against withdrawal of Georgian armed forces from the gorge. According the Defense Ministry of Georgia, Abkhazians will occupy Kodori as soon as Georgian army leaves it.
