Shevardnadze Praises Operation in Pankisi

(Tbilisi, January 21, Civil Georgia) – “Decisions of the National Security Council of Georgia are implemented successfully in Pankisi gorge,” President Shevardnadze stated in the interview to the state radio company on January 21.

Eduard Shevardnadze planed to visit the gorge on January 21, “but there is not need of this at the moment,” President stated.

According to the National Security Council decision, Georgian law enforcers initiated special operations in criminal-ridden Pankisi gorge on January 15 to crackdown on criminals.

Four criminals are arrested so far in the gorge. Two abducted persons still remain detained in Pankisi by the criminals demanding ransom for their release.
