Protesters Disappointed with Operation in Pankisi
(Tbilisi, January 23, Civil Georgia) – Protest in Akhmeta district, where criminal-ridden Pankisi gorge is located, widens as more villages join the rally. Protesters say removal of police checkpoints deeper into the gorge is not enough to crackdown criminals.
Members of Union of Afghan War Veterans protesting in Akhmeta district since January 7 demand from the law enforcers to pass more radical measures to eradicate kidnapping, drug and arms dealings in the gorge.
On January 23, President Shevardnadze praised law enforcers’ activity and thanked Internal Affairs and State Security Ministries for a successful operation in the gorge.
